This is an ongoing feature I am adding to the Network: it's called Buy, Sell or Trade. I will take an active player (or even an organization as a whole) and ask, "Given the players value, exisiting contract and current market, would you buy (extend or offer a contract), sell (demote, release, not make a contract extension offer, etc.) or trade him.
That being said, Pedro Martinez ... buy, sell or trade?
At age 36, Martinez enter the final year of a four-year deal with the Mets. He is not the Pedro of old, blowing hitters away with heat. Martinez is not only battling the elements of "time," but health too.
He struggled through 2006 with a toe injury, and later arm surgery, and missed the entire 2006 post season and five months of 2007. When he has pitched, he's pitched well. He's 27-17 as a New York Met over three seasons.
What's Pedro's future? A long-term deal seems out of the question, but does an extension come under consideration? Does it depend on his 2008 performance?
Sell? His value at this stage of his career remains unclear. If his late season performance last season is any indicator, he's still got something in the tank and could become an excellent #2 or #3 starter. I wouldn't expect the Mets to make a contract extension offer anytime during the season, but the question is, will they make one after 2008?
There doesn't seem to be a market for 36-year old former aces, so is it even relevant to discuss a trade?
Your turn ... buy, sell or trade Pedro Martinez?
